Ely
was home to Oliver Cromwell and refuge to Hereward the Wake. It
used to be the Isle of Ely, set in the fen waterlands which were
drained in the 17th century. There are fens, pumping stations
and wildlife refuges nearby.
The
Cathedral is one of the most original and beautiful anywhere,
with its famous Octagon Tower. As well as the usual religious
services it is used for concerts. It is surrounded by a range
of medieval buildings.
